Chivita Reduces Happy Hour Drink’s Sugar by 35%

Chivita|Hollandia (C.H.I Limited), a popular manufacturer of local juice drinks in Nigeria, has adjusted the sugar content of its Chivita Happy Hour drink by about 35 per cent, from 15g per 125ml to 9.7g per 125ml.

This followed an earlier notice by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) a few months ago that the company was undergoing the process of reformulating the product to reduce its sugar content.

A popular political economy analyst and the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (2013–2017), Dr Joe Abah, in a post on his X page, queried the high sugar content of the 125ml Chivita Happy Hour drink.

He raised concern that “this tiny 125ml Chivita Happy Hour drink they give on aircraft contains nearly 5 cubes of sugar. Is that okay?” while calling to the attention of NAFDAC.

In its response, NAFDAC confirmed the sugar content of 15g per 125ml “complies with the sugar limits specified in the applicable Nigerian Industrial Standards for flavoured drinks.”

In the recent production, the sugar content has been reduced to 9.7g per 125 ml of the Chivita Happy Hour Fruit Flavoured Drink.
