Health is wealth, and sometimes you might need to cough up a chunk of cash to maintain it, especially during emergencies. To mitigate this, many people subscribe to HMO plans. Paying for an HMO plan is the easiest way to secure your health. Choosing the right and perfect one for your personal and family’s health is essential.
What are HMOs and how do they operate?
HMO is the abbreviation for Health Maintenance Organization. These companies connect individuals or employees of subscribed firms with healthcare services usually for a monthly or annual plan fee.
This kind of health insurance includes a partnership between the clients and partnering health facilities. This means customers can only get their healthcare service at selected providers; hence, they are limited to the available partners in their area.
Which HMO is the best in Nigeria?
Like any service provider, there is no HMO in Nigeria that excels in all service categories. Some are best at customer service, and some in terms of the quality of healthcare service you get from their partners. The coverage also differs, even when price is considered.
Undeniably, the service quality of some HMOs is better than others; however, plans can influence the quality of service you get.

Why hospitals prescribe affordable medications for HMO patients
Many HMO users complain about receiving poor medical treatment at partner hospitals. There are insinuations that most of the partnering hospitals prescribe and dispense substandard medications to HMO patients.

Clarifying the cause for such quality of service, a pharmacist (X: @thepharmwriter) noted two possible reasons:
“If a doctor prescribes Galvusmet for a patient (N10k per sachet), most HMOs will tell the pharmacy or hospital to cost a cheaper brand (N2-5k per sachet). It’s not that we don’t want to give you the best drugs. Your HMOs don’t want to pay expensive bills. The only people they agree to pay a lot of money for are high-end staff (which isn’t common).
“Because a medication is cheaper doesn’t mean it’s substandard. Most produce with different formulations and cost, which means medications can’t be the same price. Augmentin and Fleming are exactly the same drug, but they don’t cost the same.”
Providing another clarification, Avon HMO responded, “While this is true, it’s mainly because costs must be balanced with quality. Medical inflation is at an all-time high. If HMOs increase premiums to match the cost projections for branded drugs only, the whole point of affordable healthcare is defeated. Also, as you said, people have bought into the myth that generic drugs are automatically substandard.”
A doctor and a hospital administrator (X: @doctorwalesmd) lamented, “I run a hospital and I can tell that 90% of these HMOs are out to kill hospital businesses and are more or less scammers.
“They owe hospitals and in some cases don’t pay their bills for services rendered for years.”
