MTN FiberX is, without argument, one of the truly unlimited internet data plans in Nigeria with no Fair Usage Policy (FUP), at least at the time of writing this review.
It is a fiber-internet service and hence has limited coverage. This is a review based on personal experience. I started using MTN FiberX in October, 2025. I earlier wrote about my experience using a similar service, but a radio-based internet service, which showed me a premium ‘shege ‘, and I was forced to switch to FiberX.
Before going into details about my experience, here is a summary: MTN FiberX is okay. I have only experienced a few downtime incidents in the last 10 months I have been using the service, but the customer service sucks!
That being said, here are all the things I wish someone had told me about MTN FiberX before purchasing it.
Installation Time Is Unpredictable
I have two MTN FiberX installed at my home (more on why, later), so I guess I can comment on the time frame of installation. For the first FiberX purchased, although the customer rep I purchased through clarified the installation may take up to three (3) days, I was maybe lucky to get my FiberX installed the same day as when payment was completed. The activation, however, took almost 24 hours.
For the second MTN FiberX, I purchased it on April 13, 2026, but the installation was done on April 20, 2026, after an angry call to the customer care service line. I have also read several online complaints from customers not having the FiberX installed months after payment; some are not even able to get a refund for a service not offered.
The Internet Is Good and Truly Unlimited
From day 1 of installing the MTN FiberX, the internet service has been consistent and stable. Well, not without some occasional unannounced downtime, less than 10 times in total since I started using the service, so approximately once or never in a month. The only time there was service maintenance, well, it was communicated on the morning of the D-Day via text message, with no email notification. Meanwhile, the company does send both email and text message reminders for service renewal; after all, one is more important than the other, and for MTN FiberX, the subscription renewal seems to top the list.

Low Upload Speed
I have observed over time that MTN FiberX is only great for downloads and may lag during uploads. As can be seen in the screenshot above, the Speedtest by Ookla displays my MTN FiberX internet download speed as 44.58 Mbps and the upload at almost half, 26.68 Mbps.
There Are Alternatives Offering Similar Internet Speed for Cheaper
MTN FiberX reviewed its subscription price by increasing it by around 50 per cent. The lowest subscription plan is N30,000 for 50 Mbps unlimited internet data.
Quite a few competitors are offering similar internet speeds for unlimited data at a lower price.
- FiberOne offers up to 65 Mbps for ₦28,706 (with a ₦77,250 installation fee)
- Luli Fiber offers 100 Mbps for ₦21,000 (free installation fee)
- Fibernet offers up to 60Mbps for ₦27,445.29 (₦39,500 installation fee)
- Wifiber offers up to 70Mbps for ₦27,850 (installation fee varies)
- Layer3 offers up to 60 Mbps for ₦31,780 (offers free installation)
It is also fair to say that, compared to many alternatives, MTN FiberX’s price is reasonable because it comes with free installation, and the monthly subscription price is not bad either. For example, ipNX offers up to 60 Mbps for ₦39,750 (with a ₦55,900 Setup Fee).
All Routers Are Not Equal
This is something many users of the MTN FiberX might not know. Recall, I noted that I have two FiberX services installed at my home. From my observation and also confirmed by other users in the house, the second installed router has a better range than the former. There are some areas in the house that the first router would not reach, except for maybe its guest network, which is of a lower frequency and lower internet speed performance. This, however, is not the case for the newly installed FiberX router, as it has more reach without the need to connect to the guest network.
No Power Backup
The MTN FiberX does not come with a power backup. Therefore, if you reside in an area with poor power supply, you may want to abort mission, but if you have a backup power such as a mini DC UPS (cost ₦25,000 and above), you are good to go.
Customer Service Is Disappointing
For a company like MTN, I am disappointed with the customer service provided for the FiberX. When I had downtime and tried reaching customer care, it took forever to get someone to talk to, after a long free concert of jingles and listening to automated voices.
Customer care usually inform to allow up to 48 hours for an issue to be resolved. 48 hours?! I subscribed to the unlimited service for comfort; what if I have an interview in the next 28 hours?
Aside from the phone call, the email customer service is worse! You are assigned an account officer upon activation of the FiberX. You are expected to always communicate your complaint to the officer to get it resolved, but from my experience, you are better off with the poor service offered by the call service rep than contacting your account officer via email. Your Emails will be treated with the loudest silence in the room. The best help the agent who sold the FiberX subscription to you would ever offer is to redirect you to the customer help channels, so do not bother; once they get their commission from selling to you, you are on your own.
Response time by the customer reps handling the WhatsApp channel can take more than 24 hours. Presently, the fastest way to get a response, although it may not resolve your issue, is by calling the toll-free line: 217.
Better to Purchase a New FiberX Than Request Relocation of Old Device
Yes, I have two MTN FiberX installed in my house, and this was never my intention. In fact, I have been trying to get rid of one; I already informed the company to come and retrieve one of them.
Why Do I Have Two MTN FiberX in the Same House?
Again, it was never my intention. A few months after purchasing the MTN FiberX, I had to change my residential address, but still within the same estate. Before moving, I contacted MTN FiberX via my account officer to notify them of the need to relocate the device to my new location.
At first, I placed a call to MTN FiberX customer care and was asked some questions to help fill out a form to request the relocation, but after this, it was radio silence. I also reached out to customer support via WhatsApp; the result was the same.
So, I sent an email to the general MTN Broadband customer service with my account officer copied, and to date, the said account officer has not replied to the email, even after sending a follow-up.
Two weeks later, I sent an angry follow-up email with the team lead copied; same result, no response.
I only got a response when I sent another angry email, and this time, with the Manager copied. In the email, I requested a change of my account officer. As a backup, as I didn’t get a positive response regarding the relocation request, I placed an order for another FiberX device, but in the end, the relocation was completed before the new device was installed, about 3 days interval.
I noticed one thing, however: in the onboarding email for the new MTN FiberX, the manager’s email was omitted, most likely to block the option of escalating the customer reps’ and account officers’ incompetence to their manager.
Why I Didn’t Request a Refund Instead
The normal thing to have done after my old device was relocated is to request a refund for the newly purchased but not yet installed device. But after reading online reviews of people still trying to get a refund for the device that was not installed after 3 months, I was not ready to go through such an ordeal, not even after the back-and-forth with the team to have my device relocated.
Purchasing the new device turned out to be a good decision because the new router has a better reach across the house than the former. With the old device, I had to connect the router to another router acting as an extender to be able to enjoy the WiFi once in the bedroom, but with the new router, there was no need for that.
MTN FiberX Installation Is Not 100% Free
Indeed, MTN FiberX installation is advertised as free by the company, but considering how it is designed, there is a need to have the fiber cable connected via a pole before it is wired into your home.
While the installation is free, be prepared to cover the cost of renting or providing a ladder for the technician assigned to perform the installation. This can cost up to N5,000. In addition, the typical Nigerian tax is expected by the technician, who will subtly demand it as a tip for the service (this is voluntary and not mandated, though).

How to Confirm if MTN FiberX Has Coverage in Your Area
To confirm MTN FiberX coverage, use this link:
Kindly use the link below to verify service availability in your location: visit coverage.mtn.ng portal.
However, this portal may not be accurate, as I have found the FiberX coverage checker on the myMTN app to be more responsive and accurate.
To get better results:
- Check your area/estate if you can see the FiberX cables.
- When checking the coverage portal, fill in your area name instead of your exact street name. I discovered some areas are covered but have yet to be updated on the MTN FiberX coverage map.
- Confirming whether the FiberX cable is present in your street or area is the best way to confirm if the service is available and can be installed at your home.

MTN FiberX Customer Care Contacts/Channels

This Is My Verdict
MTN FiberX is reliable and truly unlimited, but keep in mind the installation might take up to 14 days. Also, always pray it doesn’t develop any issues, and if at all, it should be a mild technical issue, as they are usually prompt to resolve it. If you need to relocate your device from one location to another, you are better off purchasing another device to avoid the stress that comes with back-and-forth with customer support.
